Android 3.0 was released in between Android 2.3 and Android 4.0
-
Android 4.0 was officially released in October 2011, and it’s code named “Ice cream sandwich” while Android 2.3 was officially released in December 2011, and was code named “Gingerbread”
-
Android 4.0 is the first Android version optimized for both tablets and smart phones while Android 2.3 is more suitable for smart phones (and Android 3.x is more suitable for tablets)
-
Android 2.3 is the more stable and old version
-
The user interface of both Android 2.3 and Android 4.0 has been improved and enhanced than their predecessors
-
Android 4.0 is more refined and stylish than Android 2.3
-
The navigation buttons such as back, home are available as soft keys on Android 4.0 where as Android 2.3 doesn’t have soft keys for similar navigation. In devices with Android 2.3, hardware keys are available for “back”, “home” and “settings” (and in some phones “search”)
-
Both, Android 2.3 and Android 4.0 have widgets that allow users to view information without opening the application
-
Switching between applications is more convenient in Android 4.0
-
Only Android 4.0 has the ability to dismiss individual notifications. This feature is not available in Android 2.3 (the user can only clear all notifications).
-
Voice input and voice activated commands are available in both Android 2.3 and Android 4.0
-
The new voice input engine on Android 4.0 gives an ‘open microphone’ experience and allows users to give voice commands any time, while a similar capability is not available with Android 2.3
-
On Android 4.0, users can do many actions (On Android 4.0 users can do many actions while the screen is locked) while the screen is locked, Android 2.3 only allows to answer a phone call while the screen is locked
-
‘Face Unlock’ feature, allowing users to unlock the home screen by face recognition is only available in Android 4.0
-
Android 4.0 image capturing is enhanced with continuous focus, zero shutter lag exposure and decreased shot-to-shot speed
-
Between Android 2.3 and Android 4.0, an image editing software is only available in Android 4.0
-
Both Android 2.3 and Android 4.0 supports Near Field communication if the device has the capability
-
Android “Beem” is only available in Android 4.0
-
Android 2.3 has many applications in the Android market than for the newly released Android 4.0 (but they are compatible)
-
In terms of the market share also Android 2.3 beats Android 4.0 easily with more devices in the market with Android 2.3 installed
Continuous voice recognition is also a new feature in 4.0 which writes every word when you are speaking it
Can I change to Ice Cream, but if I don’t like it – go back to Gingerbread ?
Good work…
This comparison helped me alot, because I had no idea in that comparison, except I knew that ICE cream is the newer, but without pointing in which aspects is it newer… Then thank you.
I would like to know if you SonyEricsson will release the Rom that can support Ice cream on Xperia x10….
nahassan2000ALTgmail.com
until now, X10 got the ICS but unofficial port….MAYBE it will get the official one later this year, but i don’t work for SE so i cant guaranty you anything…just try to search more if they will update X10. Cheers
I have a DROID BIONIC and I was issued the upgrade about an hour ago. Waiting until I get home to install the ICS. I’ve prayed that it’ll get some of the bugs outta this “brick.” Had it about four months and have already had to send it back to Motorola for the crazy stuff it does on its own. Hopefully this will help. Thanks for the information. Regards, Richard
As per my knowledge Gingerbred was released on december 2010 not on december 2011…
or may be both are released in the same year with a gap pf 3 months…

no, its not important so much the screen resolution on android….almost all apps are working for all resolutions, so you dont have to think of this.
Good comparision… is compatible to galaxy note? When can i upgrade it in India?
it is compatible with all android devices. World wide the update started a few days ago, but i cant tell you when will be released in India.
Samsung will probably release an update for note. Just keep checking for the update when you connect your cell to computer via Kies.

I am planning to buy a new Samsung Galaxy Note Soon which is based on 2.3 Gingerbird version. My question is that can I upgrade its older android version with new Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0 version. If any one sure then tell me the exact.
SG Note is upgrading already to 4.0 🙂
that means you are saying SG Note is now coming with new software version that is Ice cream sandwich 4.0, Are you 100% sure buddy & one more question which one is better either S3 or Note taking price as main part. Which one is better if both have based on same version in all type either in a battery and overall usages. Which one is the best?
yes, note is getting ics, but as a better phone SGS3 is better…note is bigger …think it as a smaller SG Tab 🙂
In android 2.3 or 4.0 which one is better for a normal user. I am planing for htc icecreame sandwitch pls advice.
I am looking to get a new phone and am not sure which one would be better. I like the Galaxy SII epic 4G touch and the HTC EVO 4G LTE but between the two, I am not sure which one would be the better phone. Any suggestions?
Thanks!!
Thanks for,
This comparison helped me alot, because I had no idea in that comparison, except I knew that ICE cream is the newer, but without pointing in which aspects is it newer… Then thank you
gingerbread does have ability to dismiss single notifications-at least on my R2D2 Droid
I’m using HTC Sensation XE which currently 2.3.4 version, but can upgrade to version 4.
should I upgrade to version 4 or keep it to 2.3.4 ? May I konw the pro and con of upgreding to version 4. Thank you.
In which way do you mean when you say that Android 2.3 is more stable? Thanks.
Guyz i am finding loads of hanging issue in my note and the phone takes time to switch application. The day i bought my note i upgraded to 4.3 and now 4.4. But still i am not satisfied with this and i am planning to downgrade to 2.3 as i think that is only meant for note and all these are third party software which is not officaly released by samsung. Rest its all a gamble. You might see loads of people updating there reviews but i didnt find any thread or blog which shows hang problem with 2.3 in note. Cheers
how about Cherry Mobile Phones…any idea on it?
good job! i didnt have much idea on wat was better in the 4.0 version!
